iPhone 7 unveiled

Apple unveiled the iPhone 7 at the Keynote event a few hours ago. As expected, the highlight of the event was the ditching of the headphone socket. Apple have ditched the 1/8″ jack for their lightning connector in a move that has sparked much debate. Apple said “it took courage” for them to make the move. What we can say is it will take courage for users to buy the AirPods which Apple are introducing. The AirPods will sell for US$160 in the United States and much much more in Africa.

Do not despair

While Apple have replaced the headphone socket with the lightning, all is not lost. The iPhone will come with a lightning-standard jack adaptor for you to use your old headphones. This move makes us wonder though if Apple are really as courageous as they claim to have been in ridding the headphone socket that we have all cherished for more than 50 years. Then again, its Apple and that is what they do.

The AirPods

This is by far the most important or rather controversial move by apple. Wireless audio transmission has been subject to scrutiny from industry specialist. Most argue quality is achieved through wired headsets. However, Apple have decided to do a leap and move away from traditional headphone connection. Apple have developed proprietary technology that will enable AirPod-iPhone seamless connection. The technology utilises the W1 chip. The AirPods connect to the iPhone without any need for pairing like you would do with Bluetooth. The downpoint of the AirPods is the pricing. At a starting price of US$150 in the United States we feel it is a bit steep. Two wireless earbuds that have 5 hours of play and could get lost easily cannot be that expensive. Phone headphones should be reasonably cheap to replace when they get lost because they do get lost quite a lot. The AirPods will be available for purchase in October.
