The Parliament of Zimbabwe has today launched a live blog for citizens to follow proceedings of the official opening of the 4th session of the 8th parliament. The move is quite a great stride on the part of the government which has not quite embraced use of technology as much as we would love. There just isn’t enough government presence on the internet. The websites that exist are not always up to date and social media presence is almost non-existent. For that reason alone, the move by the Parly is really a great stride. The Parliament sessions have of late gained quite the popularity on ZBC TV hence the move might attract more followers especially those without access to the state broadcaster.
While this is a great stride, live blogs are usually very difficult to follow on in real time and may lack the drama involved in real life. The parly would really do a fantastic job if they could livestream the sessions of their site. Guaranteed a live-stream would probably make the parliament sessions viral! Nevertheless it’s good to see this embrace of technology from the government. We believe information should be made readily available especiall with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT).
