WhatsApp Video Calling now available for Android

WhatsApp Video Calling now available for Android

In an inevitable move, WhatsApp video calling is now available in Beta version. This is somewhat a foreseen move as the app tries to stay relevant. As we have already mentioned, the feature is still in beta mode and you won’t be able to get it ‘directly’ from Google Play. Do not despair though, you can still get it, I’ll explain to you how in a few moments.

The new WhatsApp video calling feature was first spotted by Android Police, a popular Android watch blog. WhatsApp have been known to quietly introduce big updates to the messenger app in the Beta testing mode. Windows phone users also have the Beta version with the video calling feature.

How to video call on WhatsApp

To make a video call on WhatsApp right now you need the Beta version of the app. That means one of two things;

  1. Download the Beta update on APK mirror
  2. Get the Beta update on Google Play

Important: The receiver also needs to have the new Beta update otherwise it wont work.

WhatsApp are always releasing beta versions of the messaging app. In fact beta updates come like the rain. There has been times I’ve gotten up to 5 updates in just a single week. To become a WhatsApp android beta tester follow this link and sign up.

When will the video calling feature be available for everyone?

This is definitely a question everyone will be asking. While there is no sure answer to this, I have to point out that this is a very big update for WhatsApp. My experience with the video call was not as great. This means there might still be a lot of work to be done. That being said the update will probably not arrive within the next 60 days. We can only wait and see.

Thoughts on WhatsApp video calling

Without doubt this is going to be the biggest video calling app around. With a user base of more than 1 billion users, the take up will be massive. Whether the app is actually good or not will not matter much as there already exists a trust within the users of the app. It will be interesting to see how Zimbabweans take up the video calling feature. In the past Zimbos have not really been the biggest fans of video calling due to the intensive data usage involved. However, all 3 MNOs in the country have WhatsApp bundles which will mean cheaper rates for users.
