WhatsApp video calling
So the WhatsApp video calling feature is finally available for all users, great! This feature will definitely revolutionise the way we communicate. Especially in Africa and Zimbabwe where other IMs and Video Chat services are virtually dead.
The WhatsApp video calling feature was officially released on Tuesday and all you have to do to get it is update your WhatsApp.
Here is the million dollar question, will it work in Zimbabwe? WhatsApp calling has not seen as much action as it has. I still personally prefer to use a conventional call when I’m making ‘serious; calls. The local mobile networks are just not quite as good as one would expect. There are broadband dark-spots all over the place. If you use LTE you’ll know the struggle. The coverage really sucks.
So, will WhatApp video calling work in Zim?
Short answer, YES and NO. I’ve been testing the WhatsApp video calling feature on Android beta mode for weeks now. What I can say is unless you use a VPN, you will have a hard time with this new feature. In fact, you might grow to hate it. Guaranteed. Like I said, the mobile networks are just not smooth enough for this kind of thing. If however you use a VPN, you are almost guaranteed a 70% chance of having a somewhat smooth video convo.
Which VPN should you use?
Another critical question, which VPN to use? There’s just a barrage of these VPNs all over one won’t know which to use. If you are one of those people then again we have the answer for you. Opera VPN, a service provided by SurfEasy, Inc., an Opera company. This VPN is totally free and just awesome. Download Opera VPN and connect everytime before making your WhatsApp video calls.
There is a downside to using a VPN to improve your WhatsApp video calls. VPNs chew up a bit of your bandwidth. Not much, just a bit. The problem comes where most Zimbabweans use WhatsApp bundles. These bundles will not allow a VPN connection. You will need a separate data bundle that will serve this purpose. This will definitely decrease the number of WhatsApp video callers, alongside the fact that WhatsApps video calling will not be available for some old Mobile operating systems. For Android, only users with Android 4.1 and later will have the feature.
